Taqwa Defined – Part 2

Just close your eyes in your mind, and get ready to take this journey throughout. May Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) help you reach the final destination through this awesome journey of the benefits of Taqwa!

My problems seemed enormous. I felt the whole earth was squeezing on me, my chest shrinking and the mountain-like weight on the back. Was there any way out? Could there possibly be a truth that would take me out from this difficulty into a world of peace?

I looked up at my wall. And long months back I stuck a paper on it. Written over it was ‘ And Whosoever fears Allah and keeps duty to Him, He will make a way to get out of every difficulty, and He will provide him from sources he never can imagine.’ [1. Surah Talaq : 3]

My Lord subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) promised me the way out. And where was I wandering about for so long? My way out from all my problems was one word – Taqwa! And this is from the first benefit of having this amazing trait of Taqwa.

From the many benefits of Taqwa is that Allah will make all our affairs easy. As He subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) said in Surah Talaq (meaning of which is) ‘And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him of his matter ease.’ [2. Surah Talaq : 4]

Ease is something we all wish for, and the way to experience this in our affairs is by fearing Allah and possessing the characteristic of Taqwa.

So true it is that, it is a relief to get out of the problems of this dunya; of this life. However, the true relief for a believer lies in living a life in closeness to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). A life where the heart is attached to the Most Loving, the One Who is above all imperfections; a life where we can constantly relate all our affairs to Him subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) and put absolute trust in Him subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He); a life where He subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) becomes our Protector and Wali. And this life is never achievable until you know Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), until you possess the knowledge of His subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) beautiful deen.

From the benefits of Taqwa is that, Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) grants the person of taqwa beneficial knowledge which helps him live this beautiful life described above!

Now that you are seeking knowledge and your heart is getting its life back, you are falling deeper in the love of Al-Wadud, the Most loving! You would so badly want Him to love you now, wouldn’t you? If you are the one with Taqwa, then indeed take the glad tidings of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) loving you! Our Lord says (meaning of which is) : ‘But yes, those who fulfill their commitment and fears Allah, then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.’ [3. Surah Al Imran :76]

Every step you are taking in your life, you are now trying to make sure He subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) is happy with you. And as you leave the slavery of the dunya and become a full-time slave of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), you see your enemies pop up from within. The ones who were close to you yesterday, have now stood up to oppose you today. They have deserted you because of one thing you did – submission to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). With all their power and wealth, they plot to demean you. But nay, my dear sisters and brothers, if you are the person with Taqwa, take the good news of Allah’s subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) promise of protection. And your Lord says (meaning of which is) : ‘And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all.’

SubhanAllah, imagine my dear readers, Allah is telling you that their plot will cause you absolutely no harm. Isn’t Taqwa just worth it to strive for? Yes, it is.

Not only does your Lord subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) promise you protection, o you with Taqwa, but He subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) promises to support you and save you from the punishment of this world. Our Lord says, promising support for those with Taqwa, (meaning of which is) : ‘And fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who fear Him’ [4. Surah Baqarah : 194]

Yes, Our Rabb, Ar-Rahmaan, is the Most Merciful, beyond Whose Mercy there is no more mercy. And have a look at this. Our Rabb not only promises to protect you, o you with Taqwa, but He also extends His protection to your offsprings!

Recall the story of Khidr 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him). Why did Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) protect the treasure for the two orphan boys? Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says in the Quran (meaning of which is) : ‘And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous.’ [5. Surah Kahf : 82]

Allahu Akbar! Truly Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) is great. All the rewards mentioned above, aren’t they rewards in this life of the dunya? If these are the rewards in the life of this test, what did our Most-Gracious Lord, Al-Mannaan keep for us in the hereafter?

The beauty starts right from the Day of Judgement. The day which is known as the Day of standing. Why is it the day of standing? Because, the day is so terrifying that people will be standing through a day as long as 50,000 years. They will just not be able to sit down! And on such a terrifying day, Allah SWT says (the meaning of which is that) : ‘The day We shall gather the Muttaqoon to Al-Rahman, mounted.’

SubhanAllah, the people of Taqwa will be gathered on mounts! Imagine being amongst these people, my dear readers, the ones being honoured in such a distinct way, the ones gathered to Al-Rahman mounted!

And then finally, after all these rewards and blessings come the Final Reward. The reward for which the hearts of the lovers yearn for. The place that has been created by the same Lord subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), Who created every single diamond and ruby we yearn for in this dunya, and then He subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says us to strive for that place and not get hooked up in the jewels of this dunya. The place that no eyes have ever seen, no hearts have every imagined. It is Jannah!

May Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) make us amongst these people of Taqwa, about whose stations in Jannah Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) says (meaning of which is) : ‘Indeed the righteous will be within gardens and springs. (Having been told) Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]. And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, (so they will be) brothers, on thrones facing each other.’ [6. Al Hijr : 46]

‘Indeed the Righteous will be among gardens and rivers, in a seat of Honour near a Sovereign, Perfect in ability.’ [7. Al Qamar : 54-55]

Dear readers, what will be feeling when we sit beside our Lord subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)? What will be the feeling of honour? What will be the feeling when all the resentment from our hearts are removed? How many times in this life we have suffered from holding grudges against others? Yet, my sisters and brothers, don’t you think it’s worth to get off all those resentments for the sake of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) and seeking to be amongst those who will be reclining in Jannah facing their brothers and sisters?

Taqwa is such a trait which brings all these and more benefits for us. Imagine how much Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) loves this characteristic that He has put such amazing blessings and rewards for it. No sane person on this earth would want to waste their lives and not strive to attain this trait. All Praises and Thanks to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) for granting us the knowledge of the benefits of Taqwa, that which brings a complete change in a person from within. Hence, let’s get inspired and begin the journey of attaining Taqwa…

InshaAllah, in part 3 we will cover the signs of having Taqwa. Watch this space!

Jazakillahu khayrun for sharing. Truly, there are moments in our lives when we wonder where we’ve come and then hope to improve, it’s amazing how Allah (swt) reassures us the only way back to Him is through Him. Amazing Ayat too, tabarakAllah!

This is so amazing ma sha Allah! Since childhood I’ve been hearing about the importance of Taqwa. And whenever I asked what Taqwa is, I ended up getting the most common answer “fear of Allah”; which at the end never ever explained the concept clearly. Jazakillah for defining it in such a wonderful way! Can’t wait for the 3rd part. May Allah reward you enormously!

Same here. And hence, Alhamdulillah the pain of not realising what Taqwa actually was led me to design this series. Alhamdulillah for my study materials at KIU.
