It was a wake up call

Three months ago the Mauritians were shaken by a disastrous flood and this left me to reflect and write this article, which I now share with you, so that it can In shaa Allah act as an eye opener.

The event

It was Saturday 30.03.13 which seemed like any other Saturday but yet later on we discovered that it will be a Saturday which will remain memorable and engraved in the hearts as it was followed by a catastrophic and dreading moment.

Bright sun of that morning, and nothing could have predicted otherwise, yet moments later a deadly flood hit Mauritius’s capital of Port-Louis, just in a blink of an eye. The flood wrecked a total havoc in the city where many lost their lives.

And in this there is certainly a lesson.

The lesson

We thought this is a situation that other countries experience,as it often strikes them, but this time we have become the “Victims”. SubhanAllah, it has shaken the hearts to see what transpired out of this heavy rainfall in the news- looked like a tsunami- First time ever in the history of Mauritius. It was just beyond belief!

It could have been any of us trapped in this flood as many among us actually had been. Imagining about those who got stuck in the underground tunnel how they felt, how they felt the fact that they were going to die. Seeing death approaching them and knowing that they’ll not escape, but still deep down in their heart I’m sure they had a little bit of hope that they’ll survive but yet uncertain of what lay ahead of them, subhanAllah. They woke up in the morning not knowing that it was to be their last day and in a blink of an eye they were taken away by the flood- this situation was just an eye opener. It helps us to see and think beyond that little cocoon that we will live inside everyday. This is just the beginning; a beginning of what may come next. Let’s take heed of the signs and warnings that Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) is showing us.

Allah says:

“Verily, Allah will not change the (good) condition of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah). But when Allah wills a people’s punishment, there can be no turning back of it, and they will find besides Him no protector.” Surah Al-Ra`d : 11

Undoubtedly, it was a wake up call. What Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) has decreed nothing could have stopped or prevented it from happening. As we know even the leaves move according to His orders. It happened before us and nothing can prevent it from not happening to us. No matter how much we’ll try to escape, we’ll not be able to. It’s up to us now if we still want to live in our delusion or to hold tight to the rope of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He).

A reflection from the past

We can step back for a moment in the life of Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him).

Allah the Almighty told us:

“Indeed We sent Noah to his people (he said), ‘I have come to you as a plain warner that you worship none but Allah, surely, I fear for you the torment of a painful Day.’ The chiefs of the disbelievers among his people said, ‘We see you but a man like ourselves, nor do we see any follow you but the meanest among us and they too followed you without thinking. And we do not see in you any merit above us in fact we think you are liars.” Surah Hud:25-27

It happened that the people rejected the message of Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) thus he supplicated to Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He):

“My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth. If you leave them, they will mislead Your slaves and they will beget none but wicked disbelievers.” Surah Nuh :27

And Allah accepted Nuh’s prayer. The case was closed, and He passed His judgment on the disbelievers in the form of a flood. Allah the Exalted ordered Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) to construct an ark with His knowledge and instructions and with the help of the angels.

Almighty Allah commanded:

“And construct the ship under Our Eyes and with Our Inspiration and address Me not on behalf of those who did wrong; they are surely to be drowned.” Surah Hud 11:37

So, the ship was built, and Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) waiting for Allah’s command. Allah revealed to him that, water will miraculously gush forth from the oven at Nuh’s 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) house that would be the sign for the start of the flood, and the sign for Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) to act.

The frightful day arrived when the oven at Nuh’s house inundated. Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) rushed to open the ark and summon the believers. He also took with him a pair, male and female, of every type of animal, bird and insect. Seeing him taking these creatures to the ark, the people laughed loudly, “Nuh must have gone out of his head! What is he going to do with the animals?”

Almighty Allah narrated:

“So it was till then there came Our Command and the oven gushed forth (water like fountains from the earth). We said: ‘Embark therein, of each kind two (male and female), and your family, except him against whom the Word has already gone forth, and those who believe.’ And none believed him except a few.” Surah Hud:40

Nuh’s 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) wife was not a believer with him so she did not join him; neither did one of Nuh’s sons, who was secretly a disbeliever but had pretended to have faith in front of Nuh. Likewise most of the people were disbelievers and did not go on board.

The result

Water rose from the cracks in the earth; there was not a crack from which water did not rise. Rain poured from the sky in quantities never seen before on earth. Water continued flowing from the sky rising from the cracks; hour after hour the level rose. The seas and waves invaded the land. The interior of the earth moved in a strange way, and the ocean floors lifted suddenly, flooding the dry land. The earth, for the first time was submerged.

Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) told the story thus:

“He (Noah) said, ‘Embark therein in the Name of Allah will be its moving course and its resting anchorage. Surely, my Lord is Oft Forgiving, most Merciful.”

“So it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), ‘O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelivers.’ The son replied, ‘I will betake myself to a mountain, it will save me from the water.’ Noah said, ‘This day there is no savior from the Decree of Allah except him on whom He has mercy.’ And a wave came in between them so he (the son) was among the drowned.”

“It was said, ‘O Earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky, withhold (your rain)!’ The water was diminished (made to subside) and the Decree (of Allah) was fulfilled (the destruction of the people of Noah). And it (the ship) rested on Mount Judi, and it was said, ‘Away with the people who are dhalimin (polytheists, and wrongdoing)!’

“Noah called upon his Lord and said, ‘O my Lord! Verily, my son is of my family! Certainly, Your Promise is true, and You are the Most Just of the judges.’ He said, ‘O Noah! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorants.’

“Noah said, ‘O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers.’

“It was said, ‘O Noah! Come down (from the ship) with peace from Us and blessings on you and on the people of who are with you (and on some of their offspring), but (there will be other) people to whom We shall grant their pleasures (for a time), but in the end a painful torment will reach them from Us.” Surah Hud:41-48

With the issue of the divine command, calm returned to earth, the water retreated, and the dry land shone once again in the rays of the sun. The flood had cleansed the earth of the disbelievers and polytheists.

The story about the sea that divided

There is also a big contemplation in how Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) has divided the sea in the time of Musa 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him).

“(Deeds) after the manner of the people of Fir’awn and those before them: They treated as false the Signs of their Lord: so We destroyed them for their crimes, and We drowned the people of Fir’awn: for they were all oppressors and wrong-doers.” Surat al-Anfal: 54

By inspiration we told Musa:

“Travel by night with my servants; for surely ye shall be pursued.”
Then Fir’awn sent heralds to (all) the Cities,
(Saying): “These (Israelites) are but a small band,
And they are raging furiously against us;
But we are a multitude amply fore-warned.”
So We expelled them from gardens, springs,
Treasures, and every kind of honourable position;
Thus it was, but We made the Children of Israel inheritors of such things.
So they pursued them at sunrise.
And when the two bodies saw each other, the people of Musa said: “We are sure to be overtaken.”
Surah ash-Shuara: 52-61

In such circumstances, when the Children of Israel thought that they were trapped, and Fir’awn’s men thought that they were about to catch them, Musa 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) said, never loose faith in Allah’s help:

“By no means! my Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!” Surah ash-Shuara: 62

At that moment, Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) saved Musa and the Children of Israel by dividing the sea. Fir’awn and his men were drowned under the waters which closed over them after the Children of Israel had safely crossed.

Then We told Musa by inspiration:

“Strike the sea with thy rod.” So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.
And We made the other party approach thither.
We delivered Musa and all who were with him;
But We drowned the others. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
Surah ash-Shuara: 52-68

Musa’s rod had miraculous qualities. Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) had turned it into a snake in His first revelation to him, and then this same rod had turned into a snake again and swallowed the snakes of Fir’awn’s magicians. Now, Musa 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) divided the sea with the same rod. This was one of the greatest miracles given to the prophet Musa 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him)

Turn to Him before its too late

These two stories of Prophet Nuh 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) and Prophet Musa 'alayhi'l-salām (peace be upon him) clearly show us how Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) has dealt with those who have denied in their messages and those who have contradicted in faith with Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He). And we should not also forget that Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) is Oft-Forgiving and Merciful. Therefore, it’s never to too late to repent and hold tight to the true Religion which is Islam.

I ask Allah ta’ala to protect and to preserve us from His wrath and any calamities that may hit us and the Ummah. May He have Mercy on us and may He make us amongst the righteous.

 Ameen.
