History repeats itself – The Proactive Believer

There are examples in history that scar us, when we think back to them, they cause us pain. Just like now, history is repeating itself… In the time of Rasoolullah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) we had Summayah raḍyAllāhu 'anha (may Allāh be pleased with her), one of the first women to accept Islam. Summayah raḍyAllāhu 'anha (may Allāh be pleased with her) was tortured by Abu Jahl, the Shaytan of his time. The physical pain she went through was unbelievable; she was a woman just like me and you. She was a mother to child – ‘Ammar, just like some of you reading this. She was a friend to many in the community, an auntie and loved one in society. After accepting Islam everything changed. She died for me and you, so we could be here today.

Rasoolullah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) saw what happened, and he said - “O Family of Yasir raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) be patient for you will find your house in Jannah!”

Then you have another example of Bilal raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) who was tortured by those who you’d expect to care for him, but nay, when a society lacks morals – they become deprived of any care and concern for what they do to others. This was the state of Quraysh, this is the state of today. Bilal raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) was valued before he accepted Islam, his owner Umaya valued him as employee, but things changed when he accepted Islam. The torture emerged and the physical pain he endured makes me shiver even now.

Bilal raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) was beaten to a pulp by Umayah, his Master, he was taken to the desert and the heat caused him to burn. As he raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) was being tortured he kept saying one word; “Ahadun Ahad – my Lord is one.” And later he was asked; “why did you keep repeating these words?” And Bilal replied; “these were the only words I knew about Allah…”

The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) told them to be patient and encouraged others to help him if they could. One person stepped up, for this man seeing his brothers and sisters in pain was unbearable. He didn’t scream and shout, he didn’t make a scene, he didn’t go round burning flags, he raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) was proactive. And this beautiful man was Abu Bakr raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him). Abu Bakr raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) came running and offered a large amount of money for his freedom, to which Umayah agreed, and his suffering stopped. He was free… Free to worship Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He).

Imagine, not even being able to worship Allah?

This leads me onto the purpose of this article. As we know there are many tragedies taking place around the world. We’re blessed, we think we go through pain – but the pain we go through is emotional for most part, but for them – it’s a life of fear, physical pain, hunger and losing those who you believe – you need most.

Just like Abu Bakr raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) stepped up in the past, we need you to stand up today. And like history was made due to his sacrifice, we can make history by saving our brothers and sisters around the world. This sacrifice comes in three folds;

[dropcap2]1[/dropcap2] Making du’a for them

[dropcap2]2[/dropcap2] Raise awareness of their cause

[dropcap2]3[/dropcap2] Financially helping them

This leads me onto a hadeeth. The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said to his companions raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him): “The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people, when eating, invite others to share their food.” Someone asked, “Will that be because of our small numbers at that time?” He replied, “No. You will be numerous at that time: but you will be froth like that carried down by a torrent (of water), and Allah will take the fear of you from the hearts of your enemy and cast al-wahn into your hearts.” Someone asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is al-wahn?” He replied, “Love of this dunya and hatred of death.” [1. An authentic hadeeth recorded by Abu Dawud and Ahmad]

Today I make a plea to you. The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is telling us we will become the most despised of people due to our love of this world. When we think the money we own is due to the work we put in. When we forget that we’re only blessed because He subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) has been merciful to us… So we become stingy, we hold on to that which in reality has no value, unless we do good with it.

How many of you today are willing to part with this ni’mah? How many of you are willing to save another, in hope of the pleasure of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) and protection from His wrath? Do you not think you will be tested like them? Did those who are oppressed ever think this would happen to them? Whether they are Muslim or Non-Muslim. They are being tested, and so shall we. Today is the day we help them, in hope that on that day of turmoil – someone will help us…

The Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth, before you become old; and your health, before you fall sick; and your wealth, before you become poor; and your free time before you become busy; and your life, before your death.” [2. Narrated by Ibn Abbas and reported by Al Hakim]

Every matter in this hadeeth applies to you and I, and in every aspect it applies here today. You are young, you are healthy, you have money – even though it’s little, you have opportunities to make some money! You have some free time and you’re alive – what have you put forth?

In hadeeth Qudsi Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) said: ‘O son of Aadam! Spend, I will spend on you.” [3. Al-Bukhari]

The Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) also said: “There is not a day in which the obedient slaves rise in the morning except that two angels descend, and one of them says: ‘O Allah! Compensate the one who spends.’ The other angel says: ‘O Allah! Destroy the wealth of the one who is niggardly.” [4. Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

They are suffering, will you alleviate their pain? Do you doubt the promise of Allah subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He) when He said: “…and nothing do you spend in the least (in His Cause) but He replaces it: for He is the Best of those who grant Sustenance.” [5. Surah Saba’ 34:39]

Let me remind you of the reality of this life…

“Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you
Until you visit the graveyards.
No! You are going to know.
Then no! You are going to know.
No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty…
You will surely see the Hellfire.
Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty.
Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.” [6. Surat At-Takathur]

…Don’t wait until it’s over, because when it’s over, then really – there is no going back.
